Mindset

Training always begins with the right mindset. Students should approach practice with discipline, humility, and perseverance while developing the effectiveness of their technique and maintaining the safety of their training partners.

Skillset

Gongkwon Yusul builds a well-rounded martial arts foundation by incorporating striking, throws, and grappling. Throughout training, students will form a comprehensive set of practical abilities with an emphasis on effectiveness and precision.

Strategy

Knowing your techniques is only the first step of being an effective fighter. Gongkwon Yusul also teaches timing, positioning, movement, and adaptability so students can smoothly flow between the skills required to meet any situation.

Established in 1996, Gongkwon Yusul is a comprehensive, modern Korean martial art. “Gongkwon” means “empty fist”, and “Yusul” expresses the idea of non-striking skills such as throwing, joint locking, and choking techniques. Together, the name conveys the idea of opposite but complementary skills that combine to form a complete system.

Michigan Gongkwon Yusul is currently taught at Walker’s Taekwondo in Portage, MI. Classes run from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
